Did someone say Orange Dream Bubble Bars??

These little lovelies are not for eating, even though my father-in-law said they looked liked something to spread jam on and eat (giggle). These are for making bubbles in the form of a bar instead of liquid.

All of the recipes I have ever looked at ALWAYS say to use SLSA (sodium laureth sulfate) over SLS (sodium lauryl) and you can see the differences on why here:

But as for the Orange Dream Bubble Bars, here is the recipe that I copied  from:
http://www.mariasself.com/2012/02/diy-craft-homemade-natural-bubble-bath.html

Orange Dream Bubble Bars
Ingredients:

  • 1 Cup Baking Soda-I get mine from Costco in a large bag
  • 1 Tablespoon Moisturizing Oil-I like olive or almond oil
  • 1/3 Cup Corn Starch -I find super cheap in bulk at Winco
  • 1/3 Cup Cream of Tartar -I bought from Amazon Prime
  • 1 Cup SLSA (Sodium lauryl sulfoacetate) - I got from Amazon Prime
  • WET INGREDIENTS:
  • 1/3 Cup - 1/2 cup Vegetable Glycerin - Also from Amazon Prime
  • a few drops Essential Oil- I used Sweet Orange
  • 10 drops or less Food Coloring -Smith's has great pastel colors
  • Wax paper- for rolling out the dough easier
  • Medical Mask - the SLSA is super fine and will get in your lungs so make sure you cover your mouth!
  • Gloves---gloves, meh! ;) I like having orange died hands for a couple hours, but are a good idea

Mix dry ingredients in a bowl, make sure you get a fine powder before adding in the wet.

If you want two different colors like I did above then separate powder now into 2 different bowls. If you want a solid color, just use 1 bowl.

Now add your essential oil, you can either make it the same scent in each bowl or mix oils per bowl, then add in your glycerin and desired color per bowl.

Mix very well making sure you incorporate the colors all the way through, it should feel like a play dough type consistency.

Get out your wax paper and roll the dough out just like you would pizza dough or sugar cookies (yum, now I want those!). Once rolled out into a thin layer (orange layer), add on your other color (this is the white part). Then roll like you would sushi, use the wax paper to help you. It will stick a little to the wax paper, but it's OK!

You should have a pretty decent roll, let it sit for a min or two, then get out your "dough scraper" or a knife and cut into about 1/2" slice.

Let these sit, like the picture above, until they are dried out....should take about 24 hours or more depending on how much glycerin you added.

To use: break into small pieces (about the size of a quarter) and dissolve under your bath water. :) Enjoy!!

In case my directions are too complicated, here is a great video that shows you how:

Here is another batch that I made the same day, this one is slightly different because I used a separate recipe that had  citric acid in it that made it nice and fluffy....downside...it's taking FOREVER to dry:

  1. Just letting you know, SLSa stands for sodium lauryl sulfoacetate while SLS stands for sodium lauryl sulfate. You are correct, SLSa is better because the particles are larger :)
